Reduced UK mid-protein supply and uncertainty around the US soyabean harvest are making any remaining protein requirements for the winter a priority for many.

TFortunately, rapemeal supply and prices have improved, and there’s good availability of alternative high quality proteins. The new–to–market NovaPro is a UK-produced hot-pressed rapeseed expeller with similar DUP2 to soyabean meal but at 14% less per tonne.

Difficult weather in key global cereal growing regions is adding volatility to energy feed prices, but good opportunities exist following recent price drops for wheatfeed and soya hulls. The various biscuit meals and confectionery blends also continue to sell well.

Key facts & figures:

  • US soyabean crop predicted to hit 128mt1, versus 120mt1 last year

  • Soyabean exports to China down as trade war with US continues

  • Ultimate impact on UK soyabean meal prices and supply still unclear

  • ProtoTec, SoyPass and NovaPro all good options to replace soyabean meal

  • NovaPro equivalent to buying soyabean meal at £32/t below current prices

  • SweetStarch and SugaRich Dairy better for rumen energy supply than cereals
